Q.) Is Blue Mesa Reservoir good for Ice Fishing?
A.) Yes, it may take awhile to learn Blue Mesa because it's Colorado's largest reservoir. Always go to Where you caught fish before and start there. If it seems too overwhelming, do what most fishing guide services do when they go to a new lake... hire a guide for the first day of ice fishing!
Q.) When is it safe to start ice fishing in Colorado?
A.) Always!- but usually after the first signs of ice, wait for 7 nights of below freezing weather- with 2" minimum of solid ice
Q.) What kind of fish can you catch through the ice in Colorado?
A.) Perch, trout, pike, crappie
Q.) What time in the morning should I start ice fishing?
A.) As early as you can get up. The fish love biting at first light so getting there early is so important. also, this gives you alot of time to find the fish because you won't always catch on the first drop.
Q.) What are good bait to use for ice fishing?
A.) Every Species has a different bait that works better than the other, but one great bait that catches more species than any other I've ever used is a genz bug, glow color, tipped with maggots or wax worms.

A.) Almost any lake Colorado that freezes is good to ice fish on. If you're unsure, call the parks office before going to a lake, or stay on lake with other people ice fishing for safely. But most high altitude lakes will be fishable after January 15th
Q.) What should I bring ice fishing other than fishing poles?
A.) Ice fishing can literally be hot and cold. If cold is in the forcast, bring handwarmers! These simple items can keep you warm when your gear fails you. Also bring food and water. If you get to lake early enough, you will be much more tired than you would expect by first drop. Also, bring sunglasses and suntan lotion. If the sun is out, there are few worse burns than those of along day of ice fishing. Always have your face protected!
Q.) Why not just drink beer and watch TV rather than ice fish?
A.) Ice fishing is an awesome way to spend half days on the weekends. You can hone your craft as well as catch some quality, ice cold fish that are great to eat and fun to catch.
A.) The gear you use depends on the fish you catch. If fishing for trout and panfish, any rod about 12" or so with 4-6 pound line will work. If fishing for Pike and Lake trout, using stiffer rods with 12- 18 pound test will be more suitable. Q.) Does the Weather effect ice fishing? A.) Like all fishing the weather always plays a role. But there are always exceptions to the rule. I've seen huge laek trout caight in one of the worst blizzards I ever fished in, as well as not being able catch anything on a bright calm sunny day. Q.) Can I rent everything I need to go ice fishing? A.) There is one company that will rent everything you need to ice in Colorado. Click this link to directed to their site! Rent Gear!
